A Walk – 11 miles – Leader Mike Ravenscroft
A linear walk which may have a few muddy places after heavy rain but other than that it is a fairly easy walk with no steep inclines.
We start our walk in the centre of Farndon and walk across fields towards Churnton. We then walk towards Aldford and walk over the Aldford Iron Bridge. We follow the river Dee and onwards towards Chester
B Walk – 9 miles – Leader John Moreton
This is a linear walk from Churton to Chester. We set off from the White Horse in Churton across farmland for 2 miles or so to reach Alford in time for our first refreshment break in a nice village with a courtyard and cafe. We resume walking past the church towards the River Dee. Over a bridge and following the river all the way passing under the A55. Lunch by the Riverside then reaching a footbridge to Chester.
C Walk – 6.5 miles – Easy, no stiles, no hills, few muddy paths – Leader Bryan Clydesdale
We start the walk in the Grosvenor Arms Pub Car Park.
We walk through Aldford village which is one of the most picture-perfect Cheshire villages you can come across, a walk through here feels like you’re stepping back in time. It forms part of the large Eaton Estate, owned by the Duke of Westminster and is famed for its many distinctive red brick buildings which were built in the middle of the 19th century for the Duke’s family, the Grosvenor’s.
After we pass the village church we walk over the Aldford Iron Bridge. This bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and built in 1824. It is built in cast iron and has a single arch measuring 50 metres. It has cast iron railings and double gates at the crown of the bridge.
Then we will join a footpath which runs alongside the River Dee which we will follow till we reach Chester.
On the walk we will pass Eaton Hall which is the country house of the Duke of Westminster, his estate covers about 10,872 acres! and we will also pass the old location of the Eccleston Ferry which sadly no longer operates. Passing under the A55 we now see some of the magnificent properties on the opposite side of the river. We then walk around the area known as the Earls Eye Meadows and continue on to walk over the Old Dee Bridge and pass the Bridge Gate and finally on to the Little Roodee Car Park to return to the coach.
